From Karen Fothergill, Past President

It has been an honor to serve you as President of the IAEA. I want to encourage all members to consider
serving on the IAEA board. I have been truly affected by the process and the many wonderful people
I have met and worked with in our state. Our 2011 conference on October 6th at North Junior High
School in Boise, Promoting Idaho Visual Art Education was a great success, over 105 participants
attended. Nancy Carr of the Oregon Arts Alliance and formerly of the California State Department of
Education, was our Keynote speaker. Nancy provided a great deal of guidance to our board prior to
the conference, which encouraged us to make changes to our conference structure to include greater
National informational workshops. Her keynote speech was inspiring and informational. I wish to
thank our esteemed panelists Nancy Carr, Kathleen Keys, Sally Graves Machlis, Dr. Peggy Wenner, Ruth
Piispannen, and Bill Campton. Thanks to our wonderful conference presenters for their informative
workshops, Jennifer Williams, Johanna Dejong, Kathleen Keys & BSU students, Bill Campton, Sally
Machlis and U of I students, Amberlee Rich, Christine Miller and Sarah Sessions, Jim Budde, Sue
Ringquist and Jennifer Reynolds, Drew Williams Larned, Susan Kain with Kyle Luthman and Ted Smith,
Wendy Ruska Ellis, Dr. Peggy Wenner, Ruth Piispannen, Estuardo Hiram Miranda, Anne Marie Caldwell,
Cyndi King, Dr. Heather Hanlon, and Nancy Carr. Thanks to our generous and informative vendors Dick
Blick, Crystal Productions, Davis Publications and Sargent Art. Thank you to silent auction donors, your
gifts of art and art products help the IAEA so much. Catering was provided by Life's Kitchen. Breakfast,
BAM reception and delicious cookies were provided by Jackie and James Nelson. Ritta Neilsen organized
the Big Draw wall. You will be hearing more about Big Draw soon. Thank you to Kathleen Keys for
arranging for the professional development credit from Boise State University and also thank you to her
students and to Sally Machlis and her students from U of I, for their help with conference set up and
clean up. Thanks to Wendy Ellis for taking pictures of the events during the conference. Thanks to Dave
Jensen for sound system assistance. Thanks to Lorien Oberlander and Jennifer Reynolds for help with
set up and clean up. Thank you also to Cami Johnson for the Hungry Bowls displayed and sold to benefit
the Idaho Food Bank.

Following the conference we held a special workshop for a sculptural hand casting at Classic Design
Studios, thank you to Noel Weber and Ritta Neilsen for this wonderful event. Also in the evening we
held a reception at the Boise Art Museum during the First Thursday event which featured Boise's BOSCO
artists of area galleries.

Thank you to Youth Art Month coordinators Sarah Sessions and Christine Miller. Sarah and Chris have
agreed to co-chair the YAM committee again for the 2011-2012 year.

Thanks to Dr. Heather Hanlon for chairing our new committee for retired IAEA and NAEA members.
Look for information from Dr. Hanlon about plans for this committee soon.

A special thanks to North Junior High School Principal Teri Thaemert, art teachers Johanna Dejong and
Estuardo Hiram Miranda for all their support and for the beautiful display of their students art. The
custodians and maintenance staff were also a terrific help to us.

Congratulations to IAEA teachers of the year Cynthia Dittmer of McCall for High School Level and
Estuardo Hiram Miranda of Boise for Junior High School level. Mr. Miranda will represent Idaho as our
Educator of the Year in New York City at the National Art Education Association conference Feb 29-
March 4th, 2012.

Our webmaster Shawn Phelps has been a very valuable resource and has made it possible for anyone to
access timely visual arts education information as relates to Idaho and to connect to National visual arts
information, thank you so much for this service Shawn you have really brought us into the spotlight with
your fine website.

And finally I wish to thank the 2010-2011 IAEA board, Jackie Nelson, Ritta Neilsen, Sue Ringquist, Cami
Johnson and Robin Gray. Your IAEA board volunteered numerous hours to provide this conference and
keep up with current visual arts education concerns during the year. It has been a pleasure to work with
them. Thank you to Robin Gray who served as secretary until she took an art teaching job in Montana
this last year. We miss her and wish her well. Our state is in excellent hands with our new board. Jackie
Nelson will bring her great strengths of positivity, detail and organization as President. Jackie combines
the rare quality of creativity and management. We are also fortunate to have Cami Johnson step up to
serve as President Elect. Cami is a wealth of knowledge having served on the IAEA board as President
and other offices in the past. Our new secretary is Heather Hanks, an arts advocate and graduate
student at BSU. Heather comes to us highly recommended. And finally continuing in their current term
are Sue Ringquist as Treasurer and Ritta Neilsen as Vice President, these are two ladies who value arts
education and have provided a wealth of information and talent to our board.

I look forward to the growth and connections that the IAEA continues to build in our state. Thank you
for allowing me to serve.

Aloha,

Karen Fothergill
